The data undoubtedly reflects a positive trend of italian tv series. Over the three-year period from 2020 to 2022, our country produced 1,165 works, including fiction films, documentaries, and animations, distributed through primary channels such as cinemas, television, and video-on-demand (VoD).

Examining the average values for the 2017-2019 and 2020-2022 triennia, there is a 28% increase in the number of works and a 30% increase in production hours.

“Italian Series and Films in Foreign Markets: Circulation and Economic Value”

These findings are part of the research titled “Italian Series and Films in Foreign Markets: Circulation and Economic Value,” sponsored by Anica and the Association of Audiovisual Producers, conducted in collaboration with the eMedia Research Institute and with the support of the Ice Agency within the Mia framework.

In 2022, the number of works intended for primary screening in cinemas was 316, with 149 produced for television and 39 for VoD.

Emilio Pucci, founder of Emedia, explained that all 2022 data indicate high values both due to production volume growth and the postponement of projects from 2020 and 2021. Regarding television, the annual average of produced works remains stable at 95 titles over the two considered triennia.

Considering the average values for the 2017-2019 and 2020-2022 triennia, there is a 51% increase in works produced in collaboration with foreign producers.

In the 2020-2022 triennium, the overall value of foreign contributions (from producers in equal position) for cinematographic and television works reached 103 million euros, a 49% increase compared to the 69 million recorded in the 2017-2019 triennium.

Senate Culture Commission President Roberto Marti stated that the government will continue to support the industry, as it has done with anti-piracy laws, tax credits, and other legislative instruments.

Finally, the research estimates that in 2022, the number of Italian series and films with some foreign circulation ranges between 183 (minimum estimate) and 203 (maximum estimate), with a total export-related value between 106 million (minimum estimate) and 156 million (maximum estimate) euros, showing a significant growth compared to 2017 data.
