Italian television is becoming increasingly connected, reaching even older age groups.
According to the latest data from Sensemakers, Italy has surpassed the milestone of 20.2 million connected TVs, with 28.3 million people using smart TVs every month.
This trend is also gaining traction among middle-to-lower socioeconomic groups and those over 65. indicating that the adoption of this technology is extending to even the most traditional segments.
Despite the introduction of smart TVs, viewing habits have not been completely disrupted. When asked if smart TVs had changed the way they consume content, 33% of users said they continue watching traditional channels, while 67% combine traditional channels with streaming platforms.
This shows that the evolution of the medium does not necessarily mean the demise of linear TV, which in Italy continues to play a central role in the media landscape.
Smart tv production
Original content production also plays a crucial role. Comparing the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 seasons, the production of unscripted content increased by 8% in the number of productions and 1% in total hours on linear TV, while it declined by 9% in the number of productions and 17% in hours on OTT platforms.
For scripted content, there was an increase of eight new titles and a 7% rise in total hours on linear TV, alongside a decrease of one title but a 13% growth in hours on VoD platforms.
“The production ecosystem in Italy is thriving, and we should be proud of these achievements,” stated Fabrizio Angelini.
