OTT seemed like the era of traditional TV was over, but VOD platforms are gradually channeling it and making internet streaming similar to traditional TV.
OTT stands for “over-the-top” and refers to the delivery of video content, such as movies and TV shows, over the internet without the involvement of a traditional cable or satellite TV provider. This allows viewers to access content directly through an internet-connected device, such as a smart TV, computer, or mobile phone, without requiring a cable or satellite subscription. OTT services include popular platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and Disney+, among others.
Latest developments
In recent months, Netflix has introduced important updates for its platform. It has always been known as the platform that does not have ads and is uninterrupted. However, it has decided to introduce new packages with new prices.
Regarding its closeness to traditional TV, Netflix is also trying to channel this type for its users, including very important docuseries for the Italian and European panorama and, above all, it has tried very hard to approach live sports, following the example of other big players in the industry that already broadcast sports streams. However, this new project seems to be at a standstill after the failure to acquire the rights to ATP and women’s tennis.
Reality Shows in OTT
Since December 16th, Netflix has been broadcasting its first Italian reality show: Summer Job. It would seem that the model of traditional networks is still very effective and that these platforms are very forward-looking in trying to capture even those users who do not yet use the service.
Video platforms are therefore approaching the model of traditional TV more and more, with which they share almost all formats, including advertising and live programs. The only major difference that remains between the two media is on-demand consumption: the strength of these services and the only distinctive feature is a service that allows you to watch any video, movie or TV series at any time of the day, 24 hours a day, without waiting days for a new episode!
