Netflix has decided to discontinue its ad-free basic plan offering in the US and the UK as it focuses on promoting its advertising-supported subscription plan to new customers.

The basic plan, which previously cost USD $9.99 per month in the US and GBP £6.99 per month in the UK, has been removed from the sign-up page.

Instead, it has been replaced with a standard plan that includes ads and is available for USD $6.99 per month in the US and GBP £4.99 per month in the UK.

New Plan

The new standard plan allows streaming on two supported devices simultaneously, whereas the former basic ad-free service only allowed viewing on a single screen at a time.

Netflix has stated on its plans and pricing page that the basic plan is no longer available for new or returning members.

However, existing subscribers on the basic plan can continue using it until they decide to change plans or cancel their accounts.

It should be noted that the standard plan with adverts may not be accessible through all third-party billing partners and packages.

Canada

This change comes about a month after Netflix halted its C$9.99 basic plan package for new subscribers in Canada.

Canada has been a testing ground for Netflix’s introduction of new features, including their efforts to crack down on password-sharing.
