World music has grown by 9% for the eighth consecutive year. In 2022, total revenues were $26.2 billion, thanks to paid streaming.

The IFPI Global Music Report data shows that revenues in Europe, the second largest market in the world, grew by 7.5%. Italy performed exceptionally well with a revenue growth of 11.1% and over 370 million euros.

Streaming and social media music As in recent years, revenues are primarily driven by streaming, which grew by 17.7%.

The segment now represents 66.7% of the total music industry revenues, driven by a 13.7% increase in streaming service subscriptions compared to the previous year.

The number of premium listens is consistently higher than those on the free front, while the advertising-supported segment, including revenues from social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, grew by 36.2%.

Physical product business The physical component recorded a general decline of 2.2%, but vinyl sales resist with a rebound of 11.7%. Despite the decline in physical sales being a natural trend in the increasingly digitalized Italian market. Thanks to the excellent results of local repertoire that dominated album and singles charts in 2022, our physical market remains one of the strongest internationally, ranking eighth.

Synchronization revenues – which concern the use of music in audiovisual productions such as advertisements, films, and TV series – also have a positive balance, standing at +26.5% with over 13 million in revenue.

Regarding exports, it was a year with growing revenues for the Italian music industry, which in 2022 records a 15% increase in royalty income (physical, digital, synchronizations, and related rights), having generated over 22 million euros in 2022.

This increase is particularly driven by digital revenues, which grew by 12% compared to last year.

Italian consumers In 2022

the effects of investment activities by record labels on local repertoire are confirmed in a context where Italian consumers. According to the IFPI Engaging with Music research, spent over 20 hours per week listening to music.

70% of consumers listen through free and subscription-based audio streaming, while over half of young people between the ages of 16 and 24 use paid audio streaming services.

The outcome is reflected in the great success of Italian repertoire: while for the third year in a row, the Top Ten Albums were entirely dominated by local repertoire. In terms of certifications, 2022 closed with a total of 267 Albums, 2 Compilations, and 325 Certified Singles, for a total of 594 titles.

Regarding streaming volumes (free + premium), in 2022, 558 albums (+79 compared to the previous year) surpassed the fateful threshold of 10 million streams.

They belong to a total of 336 artists (+34 compared to 2021). This is a significant difference from the results of the previous decade: in 2012, only 137 albums (corresponding to 92 artists) had exceeded the equivalent threshold of 10,000 copies sold (physical + download).

Finally, it is worth noting the positive effect of the Culture Bonus, which generated over 19 million euros for recorded music in 2022.
