Amazon Prime Video will start featuring advertisements from early next year. The introduction of ads will begin in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Canada in early 2024, followed by France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Australia later in the same year.

Amazon has stated that in order to continue investing in compelling content and sustain increased investment over an extended period, Prime Video shows and movies will incorporate limited advertisements starting in early 2024. They also emphasized their intention to have significantly fewer ads than traditional linear TV and other streaming TV providers.

Prime video’s new plan

Advertisements will be included in the standard offering, and subscribers will have the option to upgrade to a new ad-free plan for an additional US$2.99 per month in the U.S. Pricing for other countries will be announced at a later time.

Amazon will proactively communicate with Prime members via email several weeks before ads are introduced to Prime Video, providing information on how to sign up for the ad-free option if they prefer.

It’s important to note that live event programming, such as sports, where Amazon already carries ads, will continue to include advertising in the premium version.

Amazon’s decision aligns it more closely with competing streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+, which already offer ad-supported tiers.

However, Amazon Prime Video distinguishes itself from other streaming services by being bundled with Amazon’s Prime delivery service, which provides same-day or next-day shipping for a variety of retail products.
