In its latest report, Digital TV Research predicts a surge in Pay TV subscribers in Africa, projecting an increase of 12 million, reaching a total of 55 million by 2029.
According to the media market research firm, this growth from 2023 to 2029 will comprise the addition of 7 million pay satellite TV subscribers and 5 million pay DTT homes across Africa. This estimation indicates that satellite TV will attain 33 million subscribers, while DTT will have 21 million by 2029, collectively contributing to the continent’s overall pay TV figure of 55 million.

Digital TV Research forecasts that by 2029, four countries will contribute nearly half of the pay TV subscriber total, with eight countries accounting for two-thirds of the overall figure. Nigeria is expected to lead with 10 million subscribers, surpassing South Africa in 2022.
Simon Murray, the principal analyst at Digital TV Research, commented, “Despite a recent deceleration in new subscriptions, Africa still holds significant potential for pay TV. Between 2023 and 2029, an additional 27 million TV households are anticipated, bringing the total to 130 million.”
